A City of London Walk
A walking tour in the Square Mile with Barry Carter, a fully qualified CLGLA tour guide.
Hello, and welcome to my City of London Walk.
My name is Barry, a fully qualified City of London tour guide and a member of the City of London Guide Lecturers Association (CLGLA). All official guides in the City Of London have undergone extensive training and have successfully taken written and practical examinations.
There is no better way to explore the City than on foot and I hope you will decide to book my basic City Highlights tour in the near future.
An introduction to the City of London…
The area we refer to as “The City of London” is the site of the original Roman settlement of Londinium. It was founded on the North bank of the river Thames after the invasion led by the Roman emperor Claudius. This was in the year 43 AD, almost two thousand years ago. It covered an area of approximately one square mile.
Today, it is still referred to by many as “The Square Mile”. The 6 metre high walls that surrounded the City, and the large gates that allowed access, disappeared many years ago but the City still retains those original boundaries and is self governing. It became one of the most important trading and financial centres of the world. My City Highlights tour is a mixture of some historical and modern aspects of this great city and is a good starting point for those of you who are not familiar with the Square Mile.
